Mark Your Calendar: The Mekepung Bull Races of Jembrana
03 November 2025

Every November, West Bali comes alive with the thrilling sound of hooves and cheers at the Mekepung Bull Races in Jembrana. The word Mekepung means “chasing,” and it perfectly describes this centuries-old spectacle where skilled jockeys race across muddy tracks on wooden chariots pulled by pairs of powerful water buffaloes. What began in the early 1900s as a friendly post-harvest contest among farmers has evolved into one of Bali’s most exciting cultural traditions, a symbol of strength, teamwork, and pride.
The atmosphere is electric on race day. The buffaloes, decorated with colorful crowns, bells, and silk ribbons, parade proudly before the competition begins. The crowd erupts as the races start, a fierce yet friendly rivalry between the Eastern (Ijo Gading Timur) and Western (Ijo Gading Barat) teams. The Mekepung Governor’s Cup Final, the biggest race of the year, will take place on Sunday, November 9th, 2025, at circuits around Negara, Jembrana.
For travelers, witnessing Mekepung is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, a rare glimpse into Bali’s agricultural roots and community spirit. The event captures the island’s essence: energetic, spiritual, and deeply connected to nature. Our Concierge Team can help arrange private transportation and make your trip effortless, so you can simply enjoy the rush, the color, and the tradition that make Mekepung a must-see in Bali.
